The temple complex is one of the oldest and well-preserved in Sri Lanka, and it is still functioning.
The temple often served as a safe place from attacks and invasions. However, in 1848, during the persecution of the rebel leader, most of the library was destroyed. The local monks are still restoring manuscripts, rewriting them by hand.
Here you will find a beautiful pond with lilies, wonderful monkeys running around who are absolutely not aggressive, but always curiously considering tourists, looking for something they can steal. To go into the temple, you need to take off your shoes and leave them at the entrance, also you need to cover the shoulders and legs below the knees. From the top, near the temple, you can witness beautiful views of the mountains and the surrounding area.411
